iPhone-Hint: Offline-Orientation

En Madrid does exists many public and „open” WLAN Access Points. But without a flatrate for the mobile phone they haven’t a permanent connection to the internet. That’s disagreeable especially if they is at a new city and get lost.

The maps application on the iPhone (and maybe with the iPod Touch also) can be used offline for this too. As soon as you are on a place which you will probably visit more often, you can „save” this place as a bookmark.

If you want later go there again, you can select this bookmark y reduce the view of the map. Now you can see your actual position and your destination. And thank’s to the compass you can straight go in the correct direction.

Reflection of ways with a GPS logger

The last two days were a GPS logger running on my iPhone. Yesterday and today in the evening I’ve looked the logs in Google Earth and think that this was very useful. If they go through the ways you’ve walked all the day in the head and see at the same time a complete map from the environment, they get probably a better orientation much faster.

I know for example now exactly why I’ve get lost in the city yesterday and wouldn’t get lost anymore. I can recommend GPS logger to get a better orientation in unknown cities much faster.
